EU Cooperation and Verification Mechanism for Bulgaria and Romania

When Bulgaria and Romania entered the EU on 1 January 2007, special provisions were made to facilitate and support smooth accession and at the same time to safeguard the proper functioning of EU policies and institutions. A Cooperation and Verification Mechanism was established in the areas of judicial reform, the fight against corruption and organised crime, which sets out benchmarks to provide the framework for monitoring progress in this area.
