EU drive against discrimination gets rolling in Czech Republic

21 June 2008, 19:27 CET

(PRAGUE) - A mobile information campaign against discrimination, aimed at 10 once-communist EU member states, got on the road Saturday in the Czech capital Prague.

"People are not always fully informed on the issue," EU Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Commissioner Vladimir Spidla, who is from the Czech Republic, said as the campaign was launched at a rock music festival.

The main aim, he said, is to make people in Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia better aware of their right to live free from discrimination.

"The humiliation to which victims of discrimination are subjected is something very hard to bear," he said.

The mobile campaign, built around a truck that will spend the next four months on the road, includes a travelling team ready to discuss discrimination issues.

Ironically, the Czech Republic remains the only one of the 27 EU member states that has yet to adopt anti-discrimination measures -- a condition for acceding to the block in 2004.
