Turkey asks France not to hinder EU bid

12 July 2008, 23:18 CET

(PARIS) - Turkey expects to advance its bid to join the European Union during France's EU presidency despite President Nicolas Sarkozy's opposition to Turkish membership of the bloc, Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said in Paris on Saturday.

Babacan also told reporters, following talks with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner, that Turkey wants to "become actively engaged" in the new Union for the Mediterranean to be launched at a summit on Sunday.

"Turkey expects its EU membership process to continue in a normal manner during this presidency," the foreign minister said, adding that he was "convinced that France will have a fair and balanced approach" as EU president.

President Nicolas Sarkozy is a vocal opponent of Turkey's entry into the EU, arguing that the mainly Muslim country does not belong in Europe.

Instead, he proposes a "privileged partnership," an idea Turkey rejects.

Turkey initially viewed the Union for the Mediterranean with suspicion, fearing that Sarkozy would offer it as a consolation prize for not entering the EU.

But Babacan said: "Turkey supports this initiative. We believe that it will promote peace, stability and development in the region."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided earlier this week to attend the summit despite having reservations about the new club that France is launching during its EU presidency.

The Union for the Mediterranean will bring together 43 countries from Europe, the Middle East, north Africa and the Balkans to develop joint projects.

Turkey and Ireland and history and culture

In summery - why nobody here says why Irish rejected the Losbon treaty? Is there alternative or just to dissolve EU? Also why there is no referendum in Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic in taking EU funds? It is very intersting morality- people who benefit vote NO. Also is it true that American neo conservatives (Mr Bolton) advocated and sponsored the NO campaing in Ireland. Is it true one of the main benefectors of the Irish Livberals who hindered the treaty is also a contractor and supplier of armaments to Pentagon? I think more federal EU based on cultural unity might eventually become USA strong competitor (like "fuel tanker deal inwhich USAir Force selected AirBus - not Boeing - for the contract of 35 bln USD). Here I want to say that many membersytates - featuring hundreds of millions of Europeans - would vote NO to a referendum if allowed, especially Germans and Austrians.
Finally - I am afraid - the Iraqi war with its one million dead civilians and five million left homeless, the Turkish EU "bid" the non bidding deals of Iraqi oil field given to Exxon, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and others - is just a new historical episode of the old battle between globalist interest groups originating in Venice 13-14th centuries and national social more people friendly EU with its cultural Renaissance resisting shameful social pattern of "easy money practices" - slavery-racism-wars-modern globalism
