EU drops Iran's Mahan Airlines from safety blacklist
(BRUSSELS) - The European Commission dropped on Thursday Iran's Mahan Airlines from its safety blacklist of carriers banned from EU skies, but kept Indonesian airlines on the list in an update.
The executive branch of the European Union said Mahan Airlines was being removed "in view of the significant efforts and progress accomplished by this carrier, which were verified during an on site inspection in Iran."
However, it found that Indonesian authorities had still not come up with and enacted an "an efficient oversight programme" for the carriers they regulate, including Garuda, Mandala and Air Fast.
The commission also kept in place a ban on all carriers from Equatorial Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Swaziland and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Airlines from Gabon were also banned although Gabon Airlines and Afrijet, were allowed to maintain their services to Europe because they were already subject to a "strict regime of systematic and rigorous pre-flight inspections."
The commission also maintained a ban on Ukraine Cargo Airways.
