Russia will 'think twice' before repeating Georgia actions: US

02 October 2008, 17:55 CET

(BAKU) - Russia will "think twice" before repeating its actions during the conflict with Georgia, US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said Thursday, calling on Moscow to fully implement a peace plan.

"The way Russia behaved in Georgia was unjustified," Negroponte said at a press conference during a visit to the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan.

"We and Europe helped Georgia after that and we will continue. We think Russia will think twice before she behaves like that again," he said.

"The way this country behaves has nothing to do with the 21st century," he added.

"We call on Russia to implement fully the ceasefire negotiated by (French) President (Nicolas) Sarkozy," he said.

Western leaders have harshly criticised Russia for sending troops deep into Georgia after Georgian forces attempted to retake the Moscow-backed rebel region of South Ossetia in August.

Russia's subsequent decision to recognise South Ossetia and another rebel region, Abkhazia, as independent states also drew widespread condemnation.

Russian forces remain in buffer zones around the two rebel regions but are due to leave by October 10 under the Sarkozy-brokered peace plan, following the deployment of European Union monitors in Georgia on Wednesday.
