Sarkozy calls for Russian troops to quit two Georgian regions
(NICE) - France's President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday Russia had "largely implemented" a promised withdrawal from positions occupied in Georgia, but called on them to leave two disputed enclaves.
Sarkozy thanked Medvedev for largely living up to his side of a ceasefire bargain struck in August, but urged him to pull-out from the villages of Akhalgori and Perevi, which Russian troops seized from Georgian forces.
"I had an opportunity to say to Mr Medvedev that there needs to be progress on the retreat of Russian forces in two particular parts of Ossetia, I'm thinking of Akhalgori and Perevi, outside South Ossetia," he said.
Russia has recognised the independence of the breakaway region of South Ossetia, and based garrisons there, including in some enclaves which were held by Georgia before the August conflict.
Under the terms of a ceasefire brokered by Sarkozy in August, Russian forces were supposed to return to their previous positions. Tbilisi insists that this has not happened and Europe has called for further withdrawals.
Sarkozy's remarks came during a press conference with Medvedev after an EU-Russia summit in Nice, southern France.
