EU agrees EUR 1bn for farmers in poor countries
(BRUSSELS) - EU nations agreed on Friday to release one billion euros (1.25 billion dollars) over three years to farmers in poor countries, diplomats said.
The funds, which EU budget ministers agreed at a meeting in Brussels, are supposed to help farmers in developing countries lift their production by buying seeds and fertiliser.
The money will be released in three phases up to 2010 with an instalment of 270 million euros due already for this year.
Under an original proposal, the funds were to come from unspent money in the EU's farm subsidy programme, but Germany and several other countries were opposed to the idea of using the budget's surpluses for a programme outside the bloc.
As a result, ministers had to scrape up financing from the budgets for external operations, an emergency aid reserve and another fund that sets aside cash for unforeseen needs.

Poor countries...
Talking about the poor countries what the hell is india doing buying a russian atomic submarine or even sending a rocket to the moon while 750 million of it's citizens get only one meal a day - mostly boiled rice and can't even afford a pair of cheap nylon sandals so they walk barefeet all their lives among the billions of rats scurrying in the streets.
Talk about sheer vanity bordering stupidity.
I suppose pakistan will also want to send a rocket and a monkey to the moon soon.
Birds of a feather...
I am also surprised!

Hillary Rodham Clinton will faithfully continue to guard israel and israeli interests in the middle east and in USa and in EU. I expect tougher language with arabs, strong pressure on EU for more funds to middle east and afghanistan, and of course, more push to admit turkey to EU. Before many years, when saddam Hussein assended to power in Irak, he nationalized iraqi oil industry ( some "globalist" oil companies lost much money). and at that point neighbouring turkey was ordered to invade Iraq and bring downt Saddam, this idea, however, met stiff resistance in the former warsaw pact which warned turks not to do so. Actually what happened in Iraq with saddam also hit the Chilean president salvadore Aliende, who nationalized rich copper mines and the country's banks. general Pinochet was guided, once again, from banking interst groups, that lost iraqi oil business for some time. The same scenario was attempted in Venezuela,as hugo sanches toppled Standard oil/Exxon Mobile from national oil fields. the losers tried Chilean scenario, however sanches has had many friends in the military and they remained loyal to constitution. what is in common between Iraq, Chile and Venezuela- they are rich on natural resources and banking groups are fighting to preserve their really huge earnings while national/social movements are trying to spread the benefits among as many nationals as possible
