Euro-MPs caught up in Mumbai attacks 'uninjured'

27 November 2008, 13:21 CET

(BRUSSELS) - EU lawmakers and officials visiting Mumbai were caught up in the coordinated attacks targetting luxury hotels in the Indian city, although none appear to have been injured, the European Parliament said Thursday.

"In principle, everyone is doing fine at last word. We are quite relieved," said parliament spokesman Jaume Duch, adding that most found refuge in the French consulate in the city.

Earlier the head of the EU parliament delegation, Spaniard Ignasi Guardans, had told Spanish radio that one official from the assembly had been injured.

The spokesman said that the person in question, a Hungarian, had been taken to the hospital and had left without injury. "He had been in the middle of the shooting," but "he's ok, he wasn't injured," Duch said.

In addition to Guardans, the delegation of EU lawmakers included two Germans, two Britons, a Pole and a Hungarian, all of whom are members of the parliament's foreign relations committee.

The lawmakers were on an official visit to India accompanied by six officials and three interpreters.

The group was separated at the time the attacks began on Wednesday evening with one part off having dinner in the city and three lawmakers and an official remaining in the Taj Mahal hotel when the violence erupted.

"In the night, they were able to leave the hotel to reach the French consulate," Duch said as 40 to 50 people remained holed up in the hotel on Thursday.

The other members of the delegation, spread around the city throughout the night, were mostly able to join the others at the French consulate. The others have been located in the city and are in good health, Duch said.

"Most don't have anything with them, not even a passport," he said, adding that it was too early to say when they would be repatriated.

Suspected Islamic militants on Wednesday invaded luxury hotels, including the Taj Mahal Palace, restaurants and the main train station in India's commercial heart, killing at least 100 people and injuring about 300.

A group calling itself the "Deccan Mujahedeen" has claimed responsibility.
